The term unconditional love carries with it the implication of condition. It also implies that the conditions are in conflict to our nature and adverse to the relationship. Another way to translate the word is to replace it with the phrase, "to love in spite of." God loves us unconditionally, in spite of our sinful nature.
In spite of what? That is the question we ask ourselves when we want to know what conditions are unnatural to us.
So when my friend made her argument that "God enabled her to love unconditionally", there is the implication that there was a conflict. Something was not right with the type of relationship she proposed and her nature.
We were made in God's image, and our nature resonates with His. This is a pretty big clue in helping us deduce whether something is right with God or not.
